Character Information
Name: Teyla Emmagan
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
PB: Rachel Luttrell
Age: 35 (by Earth Standards)
Journal:
teylaofathos
Powers: Able to sense Wraith
Allegiance: Good
Relationships: Most recently involved with Kanaan, the father of her son Torren John Emmagan. However, right before Teyla found herself on the island, they had decided that they should just be friends as both of them were on very different paths in their lives and Kanaan found that living on Atlantis was not for him.
Friendships: Teyla is friends with many of the Atlantis expedition members, most especially those from the alpha exploratory team - John Sheppard, Rodney McKay and Ronon Dex. She's always felt especially close to Ronon due to the fact that they were both Pegasus Galaxy natives who joined the Atlantis expedition. They also spent quite a bit of time together when Ronon stayed with her people after Atlantis was taken back by the Ancients for a short time.
Sexuality: Straight
Strengths: Teyla is well versed in the art of stick fighting and can often take down several armed combatants on her own. Because of this, she has been asked to train several of the Atlantis expedition members over the years. She is also a natural leader, a trait she inherited from her father - she is very good at figuring out what needs to be done and at adapting to new situations.
Weaknesses: Teyla tends to worry a lot about what others expect of her, especially her people and those who depend on her. As a result she will sometimes agonize over a decision to the point of it causing a problem for both her and the people she cares about. On the flip side, she can occasionally get impatient and snippy with people when she feels something needs to be done. Because of the Wraith DNA in her, she also finds herself psychically open them.
Habits/Quirks: Teyla likes to meditate, especially in order to unwind after a stressful day. She also likes to sing her son to sleep at night - somehow the day no longer seem complete to her if she's not able to do so.
Personality: Teyla is a very determined, intelligent woman, who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. She can be forceful, but she also cares deeply for her friends and her people and will open up to them, showing her softer side. She will also place herself in danger to help them.
What was your character doing before they arrived on the island? Teyla had given up a lot in order to join the Atlantis expedition, including her closeness to her people. It was something she never regretted, though, as she always felt she was doing what she had to in order to help make the Pegasus Galaxy safer. However, when she reconnected with her childhood friend Kanaan during a visit to her people's new home, she was very happy because she had rediscovered a link she had thought gone. Her happiness was soon broken when she discovered her people gone, including Kanaan. Even after learning she was pregnant, she continued searching for them until she was led to Michael, the one responsible for their disappearance. Michael wanted her unborn child, so he took her captive, but thanks to her friends from Atlantis and Kanaan fighting Michael's control, she was able to escape with her son Torren after Rodney helped deliver him on Michael's hive ship. Kanaan, after he recovered from what Michael had done to him, stayed with her on Atlantis to continue their relationship and help raise their son, but it soon became evident that Atlantis was not the place for him and he began spending more and more time on New Athos. Michael once again came after Torren, and Teyla was forced to kill him to protect both her son and Atlantis, knowing he couldn't be allowed to escape. Afterwards, Teyla went to visit Kanaan with Torren, and during that visit, they both came to the conclusion that their relationship could not continue as it had, but they would continue to work together to raise their son. That night, Teyla fell asleep while singing to Torren, and when she awoke, she found herself - and her son - in a very strange place. (SGA, Season 5, Episode 14, "The Prodigal")
Writing Example:
Teyla stood at the door of the hut where she was staying, staring out as her people began their nightly rituals - saying goodnight to their neighbors and extinguishing the lights outside their doors. One by one, each of the huts went dark, followed lastly, finally, by Kanaan's. And as she stood there watching, she couldn't help but think that on Atlantis, her friends would still be awake, possibly gathered together somewhere, talking or playing a game. She thought about how she would be there with them, laughing and enjoying her time with them as she rocked Torren in her arms.
It made her realize that while she had loved Kanaan, she had been more clinging to a part of her past that she could never go back to. She no longer belonged here. Her place was there.
Reaching out, she extinguished the torch outside the hut's door before going inside. Torren was babbling to himself in the borrowed crib, and as she did every night, she picked him up and walked over to the bed. Resting herself against the headboard, she cuddled her son close and started singing. Torren looked up at her, reaching his tiny hand to her face. Teyla smiled and caught his hand with hers, placing a kiss against it before continuing her song. Soon, his eyelids started to drop until he finally fell asleep.
Smiling, Teyla kissed his forehead. "Sleep well, my son," she whispered as she did every night before resting her head back against the wall behind her, her own eyes closing as well.
